Introducing Dr. Dennis Hughes
I have lived in California for a long time, but I’m not from here. I was born in a small town in northwestern Indiana, not far from Chicago. After graduating from Indiana University with a degree in Microbiology, I moved to New Jersey to perform research for a pharmaceutical company. I fell in love with the East coast. I stayed awhile and earned my medical degree at UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical school.
Homesickness brought me to Chicago to do my residency at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where I was lucky to have a great medical chief and colleagues. I am proud to have done my training there.
I moved from Chicago to San Francisco in 2007, and since then, I have found it stressful to work for corporate medical companies, with the rushed pace and long days. I have opened my own practice to dictate my way of practicing.
I have often told myself that I need to live in a city, but my feelings have changed. I am moving back to Santa Barbara not just because of the beauty and great weather, but also to be a part of this community.
I remain a student of Medicine, working hard to stay current in these rapidly changing times.
What is a
Membership
Practice?
For years, I have worked for corporate medical practices. I have usually been given 15-20 minutes to see a patient. This is challenging, especially when I am seeing older patients with multiple, complex medical issues. I have often felt rushed.
Most physicians in corporate medicine have over a thousand patients, with booked schedules, and long wait times for an appointment. I am starting a membership practice to be able to offer longer visit times, with a more thorough and relaxed consultation, and with less wait for an appointment. This is the kind of medicine I have always wanted to practice.
In order to have this kind of practice, I will keep my patient census small, and will mostly see patients who are members in my practice. Insurance will not be accepted; instead, I will take a monthly or yearly membership fee. If you would like to know more about my membership practice, please click the button below.
