DENNIS HUGHES, MD

Introducing Dr. Dennis Hughes

I have lived in California for a long time, but I’m not from here. I was born in a small town in northwestern Indiana, not far from Chicago. After graduating from Indiana University with a degree in Microbiology, I moved to New Jersey to perform research for a pharmaceutical company. I fell in love with the East coast. I stayed awhile and earned my medical degree at UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical school.

Homesickness brought me to Chicago to do my residency at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where I was lucky to have a great medical chief and colleagues. I am proud to have done my training there.

I moved from Chicago to San Francisco in 2007, and since then, I have found it stressful to work for corporate medical companies, with the rushed pace and long days. I have opened my own practice to dictate my way of practicing.

I have often told myself that I need to live in a city, but my feelings have changed. I am moving back to Santa Barbara not just because of the beauty and great weather, but also to be a part of this community.

As a concierge doctor, I remain a student of Medicine, working hard to stay current in these rapidly changing times.

What is a
Membership
Practice?

For years, I have worked for corporate medical practices. I have usually been given 15-20 minutes to see a patient. This is challenging, especially when I am seeing older patients with multiple, complex medical issues. I have often felt rushed.

Most physicians in corporate medicine have over a thousand patients, with booked schedules, and long wait times for an appointment. I am starting a membership practice to be able to offer longer visit times, with a more thorough and relaxed consultation, and with less wait for an appointment. This is the kind of medicine I have always wanted to practice.

In order to have this kind of concierge medicine practice, I will keep my patient census small, and will mostly see patients who are members in my practice. Insurance will not be accepted; instead, I will take a monthly or yearly membership fee. If you would like to know more about my membership practice, please click the button below.

Patient Testimonials

Dr. Dennis Hughes has been my primary care provider through some of the hardest times in my life. He is dependable, empathetic, listens, and always goes above and beyond. What I appreciate most is that he goes into depth about what things mean, when to be concerned, and when not to be concerned, he also answers all of my questions in the verbiage that I understand. Grateful that I can have him to rely on. It's rare to find a primary care provider that makes you feel confident with the care being provided.

Thank you Dr. Hughes.

Dr. Hughes has been my PCP for over 15yrs and has provided trusted, professional guidance as I strive to maintain peak health in my adulthood. Dr. Hughes’ approach and interaction has always made me feel like he’s interested in my personal health. He’s extraordinarily patient and thorough in his explanations pertaining to my biology and health. And, he’s also good for a recipe share as he explores his passion for Italian food.
